No Bake Halloween Dirt Cups

Halloween dirt cups are the one treat my three kids ask for the second the leaves start changing here in Indiana. They love helping crush the Oreos and picking out the gummy worms, and I love that there is no oven involved on a busy October afternoon.

These no bake Halloween dirt cups are layered with buttery crushed Oreo "dirt" and a rich, creamy chocolate pudding filling made with cream cheese and Cool Whip. Halloween dirt cups are a fun spin on classic dirt pudding cups, and they come together in about 20 minutes with just a handful of ingredients. Top them with gummy worms, Halloween sprinkles, and candy eyes and you have the easiest, most kid friendly Halloween dessert for class parties, trunk or treats, and spooky movie nights.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • No oven needed. You blend the Oreo dirt in the food processor and mix the pudding filling in one bowl, so this is a perfect make it together recipe with kids.
  • The filling is extra creamy. Cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and Cool Whip turn plain chocolate pudding into a thick, silky, cheesecake-like layer.
  • Individual cups are easy to serve. No slicing or plating, just hand everyone a cup and a spoon. They are perfect for parties and lunchbox-sized portions.
  • Decorating is the best part. Gummy worms, Halloween sprinkles, and candy eyes make every cup a little different, and kids love making their own.

Ingredients Needed to Make No Bake Halloween Dirt Cups

The Oreo Dirt

First, blend a pack of chocolate Oreo cookies in the food processor until it looks like fine, crumbly dirt. Then a stick of melted and cooled unsalted butter holds the crumbs together, so they press into a nice even layer in the cups.

The Chocolate Pudding Filling

Two packets of instant chocolate pudding mix and cold whole milk make the base. Softened cream cheese adds richness and a little tang, powdered sugar sweetens it, vanilla extract rounds out the flavor, and refrigerated Cool Whip makes the whole thing light and fluffy.

For Decorating

Of course, gummy worms are a must for dirt cups. In addition, Halloween-themed sprinkles, candy eyes, candy corn, or any assorted Halloween candies are all fun ways to dress them up.

How to Make Halloween Dirt Cups

Step 1: Make the Oreo Dirt

Add the chocolate Oreo cookies to a food processor and blend until they have a smooth, grain-like consistency. Add the melted and cooled butter and blend again until well combined.

Step 2: Mix the Pudding

In a large bowl, add the instant chocolate pudding mix and cold whole milk. Mix as directed on the package until the milk and pudding powder are fully combined.

Step 4: Start Layering

First, grab your clear cups. Then add a layer of the Oreo cookie mixture to the bottom and press it down so it creates an even layer, then add a layer of the pudding filling.

Step 5: Repeat the Layers

Next, repeat the cookie and pudding layers until you reach the top of the cup. The final layer should be the Oreo dirt.

Step 7: Serve Chilled

Keep the dirt cups in the refrigerator and serve them chilled.

How to Store Halloween Dirt Cups

Cover the dirt cups with plastic wrap or lids and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. However, the Oreo layers soften a little the longer they sit, so they taste best within the first day or two. For the best look, add the gummy worms and candy right before serving so they stay soft and bright. Also, these do not freeze well because of the pudding and Cool Whip.

Notes

  • Use cold milk for the pudding. Cold milk helps instant pudding set up thick and creamy.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is fully softened so it mixes into the pudding smoothly without lumps.
  • Keep the dirt cups covered in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve, and add gummy worms and candy right before serving so they stay soft and bright.
